Postal Code Lookup · Canada

Canadian postal code lookup, from address to area.

Send any Canadian address and get back its FSA and full postal code, along with the city, province, neighbourhood and coordinates. Then use the FSA to pull its boundary, demographics and building permits, all from one API.

Try:

Enter a full postal code or just its first three characters. Area data covers the whole FSA, and a valid format doesn't confirm a full code is in use.

What you can look up

A postal code is more useful with the data around it.

Neighbourly treats the postal code as part of a connected address record, so finding the code is the start of the lookup, not the end.

Address to postal code

Send a raw address, abbreviations and all, to /v1/address. The response returns the FSA and full postal code as separate fields, along with the normalized address and coordinates.

FSA boundaries

Retrieve Forward Sortation Area polygons from /v1/fsa/{{fsa}} for postal area maps, demographic choropleths and FSA-level market analysis.

Data joined by FSA

Use the FSA as a key to query census-derived demographics and building permits, so a postal area connects to the rest of the Neighbourly platform without a second vendor.

How postal codes work

Six characters, two useful parts.

Every Canadian postal code follows the pattern A1A 1A1. The first three characters are the Forward Sortation Area, which covers a geographic delivery area. The last three are the Local Delivery Unit, which narrows it to something as small as a city block or a single building.

In Neighbourly responses, fsa holds the first three characters and ldu holds the full six-character code. The letters D, F, I, O, Q and U are never used, and W and Z never appear first.

Who uses it

Wherever a postal code decides what happens next.

From a single form field to an entire customer file, postal codes connect records to places.

Forms & Checkout

Fill in the postal code for people

Pair the typeahead endpoint with address lookup so customers pick an address and the postal code, city and province come with it, cutting typing errors at the source.

Real Estate

Add area context to listings

Resolve each listing address to its FSA, then attach census-derived demographics and nearby permit activity to the property page.

Insurance & Lending

Build territories from FSAs

Assign policies or loans to Forward Sortation Areas, then compare portfolios and markets using one consistent set of FSA boundaries and demographics.

Data Teams

Clean up postal codes in your records

Run existing addresses through the API to add missing postal codes and normalized fields, so customer and property records join cleanly.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about this data and how to use it.

How do I find the postal code for a Canadian address?

Send the address to the /v1/address endpoint. The response returns the FSA and full postal code as separate fields, along with the normalized address, city, province, neighbourhood and coordinates.

What is the difference between an FSA and an LDU?

The FSA, or Forward Sortation Area, is the first three characters of a postal code and covers a geographic delivery area. The LDU, or Local Delivery Unit, is the last three characters and narrows it to something as small as a city block or building. In Neighbourly responses, the ldu field holds the full six-character code.

What data can I get for a postal code area?

At the FSA level you can retrieve the boundary polygon, census-derived demographics and building permits. FSA boundaries come from /v1/fsa/{fsa}, and demographics from /v1/demographics/find?fsa=.

Does this tool confirm a postal code exists?

Not on its own. The tool checks the format and region, then shows area data for the code's FSA. A correctly formed full postal code may still not be in use.

What format do Canadian postal codes use?

Six characters in the pattern A1A 1A1, alternating letters and digits. The letters D, F, I, O, Q and U are never used, and W and Z never appear as the first letter.

What does the first letter of a postal code mean?

It identifies the postal district. Most letters match a province or territory, while Quebec and Ontario are split across several: G, H and J for Quebec, and K, L, M, N and P for Ontario.

Which parts of Canada are covered?

Address and postal code resolution covers all Canadian provinces and territories, and every FSA in Canada has a census-derived demographic profile.
